Story and history
Quba Mosque is the first mosque built in Islam. The Prophet ﷺ founded it during the Hijrah (his migration to Madinah), when he arrived in the city. He ﷺ used to come to it every Saturday and pray in it. The mosque has been renovated and expanded over the centuries. Its distinctive modern expansion was designed by the famous Egyptian architect Abdel-Wahed El-Wakil. The mosque is in the south-west of Madinah.
Virtue of visiting
Praying in it earns a reward equal to that of an Umrah (the lesser pilgrimage) for anyone who purifies himself at home and then comes to it intending only to pray there. This is based on the hadith of the Prophet ﷺ: “Whoever purifies himself in his house, then comes to Quba Mosque and offers a prayer in it, will have a reward like that of an Umrah” (Narrated by an-Nasa'i and Ibn Majah).
Visiting tips
Make wudu (ablution) where you are staying before you set out, and intend to pray in the mosque, so that you earn the reward mentioned in the hadith. There are several historic sites near the mosque that are worth visiting on the same trip.
