Story and history

This is the mosque where the first Friday prayer in Islam was held, led by the Prophet ﷺ. It is also known as the Mosque of Banu Salim ibn 'Awf, the Valley Mosque (Masjid al-Wadi) and the Mosque of 'Utbah ibn Ban. During his Hijrah (migration) from Makkah to Madinah, the Prophet ﷺ stayed in Quba for four days. Then, on Friday morning, he set out towards the heart of Madinah. When he reached the bed of Wadi Ranuna, in the lands of Banu Salim ibn 'Awf, the time for the Friday prayer came. So he gathered the Muslims for the Friday prayer. He led them in the first Friday prayer and gave them the first Friday sermon in Islam. The mosque was built on that spot.

Virtue of visiting

It is reported that the Prophet ﷺ said in his sermon at the first Friday prayer held in this place: «Now then, O people, send forth [good] for yourselves… and know that Allah orders justice and good conduct…» (as-Sirah an-Nabawiyyah by Ibn Hisham, and at-Tabaqat by Ibn Sa'd). The place is also linked to the rulings of the Friday prayer and to the command to proceed to it, given in the words of Allah the Exalted: «O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade.» (Surah Al-Jumu'ah 62:9; translation of the meaning: Saheeh International) It is Sunnah (recommended) to visit it and pray in it: for example, a voluntary prayer, the prayer of greeting the mosque, or the Friday prayer if possible. This recommendation draws on the fact that it is the place where the first Friday prayer in Islamic history was instituted and held.
