Story and history
It is one of the well-known wells linked to the Prophet ﷺ, and one that was dear to him. Fresh water used to be brought to him from it. He drank from it and performed ablution (wudu) with its water. He asked Allah to bless it and said that it lies over one of the springs of Paradise. Its owner was the noble Companion Sa'd ibn Khaythamah (may Allah be pleased with him). One of the clearest signs of its historical value is that the Prophet ﷺ instructed 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that he should be washed with its water after his death. So he was washed with seven water-skins of its water, their ties still unopened, as he had instructed.
Virtue of visiting
'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: "When I die, wash me with seven water-skins from my well, the well of Ghars." (Sunan Ibn Majah) Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) reported that the Messenger ﷺ said: "What an excellent well is the well of Ghars! It is one of the springs of Paradise, and the best of water." (Sunan Ibn Majah) People visit it to connect with the traces of the Prophet ﷺ and to learn about the landmarks of the Seerah (the Prophet's biography).
